Signs Of Fall In Crown Point

Signs Of Fall In Crown Point

Standing on my back patio a couple of weeks ago, barbecuing hot dogs, burgers and sweet corn, I savored the sounds of summer. Kids are laughing, cicadas buzzing, dogs barking, cardinals scolding, geese honking….wait a minute, geese? In August? Sure enough, my first indicator of the oncoming season were flying high overhead, too lofty to be seen through the treetops, but audibly honking their presence-Canadian geese.

The start of the migration to warmer climates, the signal that fall is upon us.

In the past two weeks, I notice more indicators-the truck at Terry’s Mobil with the snowplow newly attached; the changing , lengthening shadows on my back patio and sighting the geese themselves, strolling about empty fields alongside the high school. Fall in Crown Point is just around the corner. It’s a beautiful, breathtaking, busy time of year in Northwest Indiana.

Enjoy the colorful foliage as you drive down Main and Court streets nestled among the dignified backdrop of the historical homes: burning bushes exploding with radiant color; mums in rich hues of red, orange and yellow; vistas of multicolored trees, occasionally interspersed with a magical mist hanging at ground level. The textures, shapes and colors of squash, pumpkins, Indian corn. One can make a season ending visit to the Farmer’s Market, stocking up on ingredients for warm soups and pies. Stroll through the fairgrounds and enjoy the fall color, take the family out for pictures amid the leaves. Hay rides, bonfires, apple and pumpkin picking. Sometimes one can hear the distant gunfire of the early morning hunters.

Friday night high school football. Homecoming – please bring the parade back to the Square! School concerts and plays; new shows and old favorites on television. The Bear gear gets aired out, and conversations turn toward defense, offense, injuries and boneheaded plays. You see the cross country track kids hoofing it down Main, and the St. Mary’s kids around town in their plaid uniforms. The library gets busier. The sun hangs lower in the sky; the wind has a bite to it. Time to enjoy this vibrant season before old man winter comes to town.

Editors’ Note: To all of our readers- please welcome Janet B to the staff here at Around Crown Point. She’s a CP resident who loves our town and we are fortunate to have her here to contribute to the positive vibes on the site. I am stoked to see what her creative mind will come up with over the coming weeks and month. -AL

Oh, so true. Today I just went past Mowry’s Fruit Farms (apples!) and saw they were open. The mornings are a bit darker with the alarm waking you up instead of rays of sunshine trying to peek in. Here’s hoping we all get to feel some brisk Fall temperatures for a bit before the snow flies! Nice essay, Janet!

  2. Ahhhh, fall. I love it! Great job at making me picture it in my head, and feeling it as I read your post. Cannot wait!
